Occasionally, I’ll get asked by a perspective client or someone at a wedding, “where did the name Lumen Photography come from?” It’s a long story but I’ll start at the beginning. I started Lumen Photography my freshman year of college and at the time I was having a lot of trouble thinking of suitable names. Evan Uribe Photography… Uribe Photography… etc. None of those names rung true for me unfortunately.
From there, I was stuck. I began to try and brainstorm names that wouldn’t be so common. What I eventually came upon was Lumen Photography. Lumen stands for light in Latin. A Lumen is also a measure of the total amount of visible light emitted by a source of light. Depicted by the symbol lm. Without light, there is NO photography. In both film and digital cameras, the film/sensor record the light they are exposed to during an exposure. Additionally, when you hire a photographer, you’re not hiring them for their ability to just snap a photo with a camera – you’re hiring the photographer for the knowledge on how to use light. When harsh light is appropriate versus soft light, when to block a certain intrusive light source to create a more flattering shadow. The list goes on and on. As a professional photographer, it is my job to use light to make you look adventurous, couture, and awesome.
After coming upon the idea of Lumen Photography as a name, there was no other option!
