today’s offerings are… well let’s be frank, they’re pretty darn epic is what they are.

may i introduce you to dan rather!  i’m sure many of you know him as he is one of the most influential journalists of the 20th and 21st century.  formerly of cbs, dan rather now hosts a tv show on the cable channel hdnet called dan rather reports.  he came to olaf to give a talk on behalf of the political awareness committee on journalistic accountability.  as a photographer, this touched especially close to home as he expounded on how it is our responsibility to understand who sponsors these large news stations and what their agendas are.  he also encouraged the students of st. olaf to do the same for their politicians be they republican or democrat.  he is one of the most charismatic people you’ll ever meet and on top of that, despite having been a internationally recognized figure who has covered the largest stories of the past 50 years, he is humble.  my favorite picture of the night was when a student was giving him a few large compliments during the q&a sesh and he laughed it off and said, much more eloquently than i can paraphrase, that he was undeserving of such praise though he was always appreciative of it (here he is leaning back with his hands out with an incredibly honest smile… it is one of those pics that i got where i was said to myself, “this is my fav of the night!”).  anyhoo, after the speech i was fortuitous enough to be allowed in the small group session he was holding with some of the political leaders on st. olaf campus.  there i got to shake his hand and get a picture with him.  hopefully, i’ve done his visit justice and summed it up well with these pictures.  thanks so much for reading and stay tuned for my next blog post early next week of scott and sarah’s wedding.
